WASHINGTON (7News) — U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA-07) delivered one of her final speeches on Capitol Hill on Monday as she begins shifting gears toward her campaign for Virginia governor.
Spanberger was the first to hit the podium at around noon and spoke briefly about her three terms in office and thanked those in her district.
Rep. Spanberger, who represents parts of northern and central Virginia, including Culpeper, Prince William, Stafford, King George, and Spotsylvania counties, will step down from Congress at the end of the year.
Spanberger in November 2023 announced that she would vie for the state’s highest leadership role, replacing current Governor Glenn Youngkin after he completes his second term. Per law, governors in the Commonwealth are limited to two terms.
Fellow Democrat Eugene Vindman will fill Spanberger’s seat in the House chamber after narrowly defeating his Republican opponent Derrick Anderson.
