HENRICO, Va. — On the 30-year anniversary of the enactment of the historic Brady Law, Brady PAC today announced its endorsement of U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger to serve as the next Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Spanberger — a former federal law enforcement officer and former CIA case officer — has been a consistent champion for commonsense gun violence prevention measures in the U.S. House, including universal background checks and safe storage. In Congress, Spanberger has brought both parties together on proposals to keep Virginia’s communities safe — including through the passage and signing of the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.
“As a lawmaker, I’ve met with survivors of gun violence, as well as the loved ones of victims. As a parent, I know the feeling of worrying about the safety of our kids as they board the bus — and I know the fear that comes with each active-shooter drill. And as a former federal agent who carried a gun for my job every day, I know there is much more to be done to keep our communities safe,” said Spanberger. “Virginians deserve a Governor who will focus on reducing gun violence and protecting our families, children, and law enforcement. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act — the first federal gun safety legislation in decades — demonstrated how we can bring our divided political parties together around this common purpose. I’m grateful for the support of Brady PAC as we unite around this goal.”
Brady PAC’s endorsement comes on the 30-year anniversary of the signing of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act — known as the Brady Law.
“If Virginians want to make strides to end gun violence, they need a champion in the Governor’s office. Abigail Spanberger is that champion. Brady PAC is proud to endorse her for Governor,” said Kris Brown, Chair & Founder, Brady PAC. “Representative Spanberger’s record in Congress illustrates her fierce commitment to ensuring responsible firearm ownership and protecting our communities. We will mobilize our activists on the ground to make sure she is elected to give all Virginians a future free from gun violence.”
Brady PAC — the political arm of Brady: United Against Gun Violence — endorses candidates who support commonsense gun violence prevention policies, including universal background checks, safe storage, and the reinstatement of a ban on new assault weapons. According to its mission, Brady PAC seeks to uphold the “policy ideals championed by its sister organization — one of the nation’s oldest gun violence prevention grassroots advocacy organizations.”
BACKGROUND
Earlier this month, Spanberger announced her campaign to serve as the 75th Governor of Virginia. Since launching her campaign, Spanberger has been endorsed by former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam; U.S. Representatives Jennifer Wexton (VA-10), Gerry Connolly (VA-11), and Don Beyer (VA-08); former U.S. Representatives Elaine Luria (VA-02) and Tom Perriello (VA-05); and dozens of Virginia state and local officials.
Spanberger is serving her third term in the U.S. House of Representatives. In Congress, she serves on the U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the U.S. House Agriculture Committee.
Before Congress, Spanberger served as a federal law enforcement officer — tracking narcotics traffickers and working money laundering cases — and as a CIA case officer — working undercover on counterterrorism and nuclear counterproliferation cases. She and her husband Adam are the proud parents of three school-aged daughters.
