Job Description: Deputy Press Secretary
The Spanberger for Governor campaign is seeking an organized, hard-working, and highly motivated team player to serve as Deputy Press Secretary on the most high-profile race in the nation 2025. The Deputy Press Secretary will work within the Campaign’s communications team to deliver Abigail Spanberger’s message across Virginia, grow the campaign’s audience, and help execute an aggressive and proactive press strategy.
The Deputy Press Secretary will report directly to the Press Secretary and will work closely with the Communications Director, as well as other departments. This is a full-time position based in Richmond, Virginia.
Job Responsibilities
- Drafting and editing press releases, background documents, newsletters, advisories, talking points, remarks, op-eds, and other materials.
- Responding to inquiries from Virginia print, radio and television journalists.
- Pitching events and stories to appropriate media and outlets.
- Researching new opportunities for proactive media outreach.
- Communicating with campaign surrogates and affiliate organizations to coordinate messaging.
- Working with the Campaign’s digital department to coordinate online messaging.
- Supporting the work of the Campaign’s Press Secretary in managing media relationships.
- Assisting the Press Secretary in managing the Press Assistant and press fellows and/or interns.
- Other administrative and organizational responsibilities as needed to support the communications department.
- All other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- At least (1) one cycle of previous communications experience with political campaigns, the Virginia General Assembly, Capitol Hill, or other relevant roles.
- Excellent writing skills and close attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- Good judgment.
- A desire to work long campaign hours, including evenings and weekends in 2025.
- Ability to manage and complete multiple projects under competing and tight deadlines.
- Access to a car and ability to easily travel.
Compensation:
$5,500/month, commensurate with experience. Health, vision, and dental insurance are included with Employee premiums covered 100% by Spanberger for Governor.
