Defend The Vote Executive Director: “Abigail Spanberger Has Been at the Tip of the Spear Battling Corruption and Protecting the Interests of Regular People in Our Democracy”

RICHMOND, Va. — Defend The Vote (DTV), one of America’s largest organizations devoted to electing pro-voting rights candidates, today endorsed Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger to serve as the next Governor of Virginia.

In endorsing Spanberger, Defend The Vote praised her work to clean up corruption, protect voting rights, and make sure every eligible voter in Virginia has the opportunity to participate in safe, accessible elections so that their voices are heard and their votes are counted.

“Abigail Spanberger has been at the the tip of the spear battling corruption and protecting the interests of regular people in our democracy,” said DTV Executive Director Brian Lemek. “She believes that voters in Virginia should have the power to shape policies that directly affect their lives — from grocery prices and housing costs to access to health care. We’re proud to support her candidacy and look forward to helping elect her governor.”

In its announcement, Defend The Vote added, “Spanberger has been at the forefront of the fight in Congress to pass reforms to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in safe, accessible elections so that their voices are heard and their votes are counted.”

BACKGROUND

At the federal level, Spanberger worked to restore voter protections, protect voters from discrimination, and push back against efforts to suppress Americans’ votes. She helped introduce and voted to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to defend all Virginians’ and Americans’ right to cast a ballot.

Spanberger also built a reputation for working with both Democrats and Republicans to clean up corruption and reduce conflicts of interest in Washington. She led a bipartisan effort to ban Members of Congress — as well as their spouses — from buying, selling, or trading individual stocks.

As Governor, Spanberger will work to make Virginia’s state government more accessible to the Virginians it serves.
