ICYMI: Governor-Elect Spanberger Discusses Lowering Costs, Transition, Filling Out Her Administration with POLITICO

Governor-Elect Spanberger: “I Recognize That My Mandate Is for Me To Be Steady”

RICHMOND, Va. — Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger last night joined POLITICO’s “Transition of Power: What’s Next for Virginia” event at Richmond’s Main Street Station to discuss how she’s building her administration and preparing to work toward lowering costs for Virginians across the Commonwealth.

“In addition to the legislation that we’ll be pursuing, I’ll be moving on some executive orders related to affordability. But even at this moment, as I’m interviewing cabinet secretaries and agency heads, the topic of affordability, of not just affordability for the people of Virginia, but frankly, how it is that we as a Commonwealth can save money or make sure that we are spending the taxpayer dollars wisely,” said Spanberger. “That notion of affordability, that prioritization, is part and parcel of even the way incoming secretaries and agency heads are looking at their job.”

Spanberger also outlined how her administration will be relentlessly focused on addressing voters’ top-of-mind concerns and work to deliver real results for Virginians.

“I think that the mandate that I perceive — having won with that significant of a margin — is to focus on the things that I talked about on the campaign trail,” said Spanberger. “So affordability, strengthening our public schools, the safety of our communities, and frankly, desire to see people actually getting things done, working together, calming the chaos.”

“I recognize that my mandate is for me to be steady, to be focused on growing Virginia, to be focused on being the principal cheerleader and salesperson of our Commonwealth when it comes to bringing investment and in bringing jobs and strengthening our economy and standing up for Virginia, whether it be proactively or in response to attacks that might be coming in the form of legislation from Washington or bad policy from the White House,” continued Spanberger. “But then it is also delivering on the legislative priorities that I spoke about — affordability, principally in housing, healthcare, and energy.”
