“Spanberger Has Positioned Herself as a Bulwark Against Further Rollbacks”
RICHMOND, Va. — Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger last week in Virginia Scope continued to stand up for Virginians’ fundamental right to privacy, right to access contraception, and ability to plan their families.
The article — for which Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears declined to comment — highlights the contrast between the Lieutenant Governor and Spanberger, which “reflects not only the ideological divide between the two candidates but also the high stakes for Virginians navigating a shifting legal landscape” in the aftermath of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
The story continued, “Spanberger has positioned herself as a bulwark against further rollbacks, promising to oppose new restrictions and protect access to contraception.”
Virginia is the only state in the South that has not passed further restrictions on reproductive healthcare access following the Supreme Court’s Dobbs ruling.
“But elsewhere in the South, we have seen extreme politicians and judges restrict access to contraception, jeopardize the health and safety of women, and undermine families’ right to privacy,” said Spanberger to Virginia Scope.
As the next Governor of Virginia, Spanberger has made clear that she will fiercely defend Virginians’ right to make their own healthcare decisions — and if legislation to protect those rights came across her desk, she would sign it into law.
“I believe Virginians deserve leaders who will stand up for their fundamental freedoms,” continued Spanberger. “I find it unacceptable that some politicians believe they’re entitled to dictate families’ personal healthcare decisions.”
Spanberger’s record on defending Virginians’ reproductive freedom is clear. During her three terms serving Virginia’s Seventh District in Congress, she twice voted to codify Roe v. Wade, voted to protect the right to travel for reproductive care, and supported legislation to enshrine the right to contraception in federal law.
“I know that Abigail Spanberger will defend the right of Virginians to make their own personal healthcare decisions,” said Jamie Lockhart, Executive Director, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia. “We see that from her time in Congress and her vocal support for the proposed amendment to Virginia’s Constitution.”
