SPAN VIRGINIA: Spanberger Listens to Virginians Across Hampton Roads, Talks Plan to Make Virginia More Affordable

On Friday, Spanberger Met With Elected Officials, Business Leaders, & Community Members to Listen to the Challenges They’re Facing

RICHMOND, Va. — On Friday, Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger met with Virginians across Hampton Roads to listen to their ideas, thoughts, and concerns about the future of the Commonwealth — and lay out her plan to make Virginia more affordable as its next Governor.

“My vision for the future of our Commonwealth has always been — and will always be — guided by Virginians. On Friday, I had the opportunity to connect with Virginians across Hampton Roads to hear about the issues impacting them most. No matter where I am across our Commonwealth, I hear from working Virginians, young people, and seniors about issues of affordability — from the rising cost of healthcare and prescription drugs to their high energy bills and the lack of affordable housing in their communities. And the same is true in Hampton Roads,” said Spanberger. “As the next Governor of Virginia, I look forward to working on behalf of all of Virginia’s communities — from Norfolk to Norton — to put Virginia first, make our Commonwealth more affordable, and build a stronger future for Virginia’s families.”

DEMOCRATIC BUSINESS ALLIANCE OF SOUTH HAMPTON ROADS (DEMBIZ) BREAKFAST

In Norfolk, Spanberger began the day at the DemBiz Breakfast, where she met with local business leaders and listened to their concerns about attacks on Virginia’s economy coming from Washington. Spanberger spoke about how the Trump Administration’s reckless tariff policy and federal job cuts are hurting Virginia. Spanberger also spoke about how she, as the next Governor of Virginia, will protect the Commonwealth’s economy, support clean energy and infrastructure development in Hampton Roads, and strengthen workforce training programs that set Virginians up for success.

MEETING WITH HAMPTON ROADS FAITH LEADERS

Later on Friday morning, Spanberger met with faith leaders from across Hampton Roads and listened to the issues facing their congregations and communities. Spanberger and local faith leaders discussed the need to  strengthen Virginia’s public schools, pass commonsense legislation to prevent gun violence, and invest in the next generation of Virginians.

TALKING HEALTHCARE & PRESCRIPTION DRUG AFFORDABILITY AT BROTHERS RESTAURANT

With local leaders and community members at BROTHERS restaurant in Norfolk, Spanberger continued to outline her plan to lower healthcare and prescription drug costs for Virginians. In every corner of the Commonwealth, Spanberger is hearing stories from Virginians who are working harder than ever and still finding it difficult to get by — and in Richmond, Spanberger will work to make Virginia more affordable.

MEETING WITH BLACK FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS IN PORTSMOUTH

Later on Friday, Spanberger met with dozens of Black female entrepreneurs in Portsmouth and listened to the challenges they’re facing, including as a result of the chaos caused by President Trump and DOGE. Spanberger made clear how, as the next Governor of Virginia, she will work to bring the voices of Virginia’s entrepreneurs to the decision-making table and always stand up for the best interests of all Virginians.

BACKGROUND

Spanberger served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 2019 to January 2025. Before Congress, Spanberger served as a federal law enforcement officer — tracking narcotics traffickers and working money laundering cases. She then served as a CIA case officer — working undercover on counterterrorism and nuclear counterproliferation cases. She and her husband Adam are the proud parents of three school-aged daughters in Virginia public schools.

Abigail Spanberger announced her campaign to serve as the 75th Governor of Virginia in November 2023.
