WTKR [Norfolk]: Spanberger unveils energy affordability agenda outside a Norfolk home

The race for Virginia governor continues today as Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger made a stop in Hampton Roads.

She was in Norfolk announcing her plan to lower energy costs across the Commonwealth. Spanberger says one key point in her plan is making sure data centers don’t drive up energy costs for everyone else in Virginia. The announcement came at a home WTKR News 3 anchor Erin Miller has been to before. Homeowner Gwendolyn Bailey says she put money into weatherizing her home to bring her bills down.

“What I hear from Virginians all across the Commonwealth are concerns about rising energy costs. It’s great to have Ms. Gwendolyn Bailey speak about her experiences in utilizing weatherization programs that have allowed her to certainly cut down on the amount of electricity that she utilizes, which is helpful to the larger grid and energy circumstance for the state but beneficial to her as a individual.”

Spanberger also said her focus also includes looking at energy loss through a lack of weatherization … or from old infrastructure.

She visited the home of a Norfolk resident who recently made her home more energy efficient. Some of the changes include new windows and solar panels on the roof.

Spanberger spoke about how smart energy-efficiency projects can lower Virginians’ energy bills, drive economic growth, and create local jobs.

“And so the more we can ensure efficiency that there’s not lost electricity, from lack of weatherization or from old infrastructure, is part of one in many pieces, of policies and projects that we can pursue to support this, these efforts,” Spanberger said.

Spanberger mentioned the offshore wind project and other energy initiatives already underway in Virginia.

“These should be points of pride, because not only are they new jobs and energy generation, but it is Virginia leading the way into the future to meet demand, ensure reliability, and ultimately, deliver on affordability for Virginians,” she said.

WHRO [Norfolk]: Spanberger Outlines Energy Affordability Plan in Norfolk

Former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat running for Governor in Virginia, came to Norfolk today to announce her plan for lowering energy bills. She spoke at the home of a Norfolk resident who cut costs by installing solar panels and replacing old windows. Spanberger says energy efficiency is part of her broader effort on affordability.

“I will build a statewide strategy, not a statewide mandate, but a statewide strategy to make Virginia more energy independent by supporting local energy generation and focusing on energy sources with low or no fuel costs.”
