BEDFORD, Va. (WSET) — Abigail Spanberger, a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and former member of the CIA, has officially entered the race for Virginia’s next governor. Spanberger is a Democrat, and is focusing her campaign on key issues such as the economy and housing.

“My focus is on making sure I’m listening to people across our communities to ensure that as governor, I will be laser-focused on issues that matter most and how we can make communities stronger in every way,” Spanberger said.

Spanberger’s platform includes plans to lower costs for Virginians at pharmacies, grocery stores and in housing. She emphasized her track record of bipartisan collaboration and her commitment to working for all Virginians.

“Every corner of Virginia is central, and should be central to the future of our commonwealth’s growth, our strength, our economy,” she said.

Supporters of Spanberger are enthusiastic about her candidacy. Rick Howell, a supporter, said, “She is highly capable, highly intelligent, works hard, has a career of public service behind her. The three terms in Congress demonstrated that absolutely, she knows how to work with the other party.”

Another supporter, Sharon Cooper, expressed confidence in Spanberger’s dedication. She said, “I’m not so much into the power as I am like she said, into the work, and so I think she’ll work for us.”

Spanberger also highlighted her commitment to rural areas and her goal of ensuring Virginia has the best public school system in the country.
