CNN: Spanberger Makes “Cost-of-Living Issues a Cornerstone of Her Campaign”

Spanberger: “Every Day on The Campaign Trail, I’m Hearing About Issues of Affordability”

RICHMOND, Va. — New reporting from CNN highlights how Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger is meeting Virginians across the Commonwealth who are worried about the rising costs of living — and how she remains laser-focused on lowering costs for Virginia families as their next Governor.

The reporting lays out how Spanberger is prioritizing lowering costs while Winsome Earle-Sears praises the Trump Administration’s attacks on the federal workforce, reckless tariff policy, and Republican tax law that are driving up costs and hurting Virginia’s families and economy.

Spanberger’s focus on saving Virginians money — specifically, her Affordable Virginia Plan — is resonating with Virginians in every community as new polling spotlighted by CNN shows affordability is the top issue for Virginia voters.

The Democratic candidates in this fall’s top statewide races have chosen a relentless focus on one word: affordability.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill rolled out a “Save You Time and Money” plan in New Jersey. Former Rep. Abigail Spanberger turned to “Affordable Virginia” as the name for her economic proposal. Their ads about the need to bring down costs are running on repeat in both states.

In Virginia, 28% of voters identified the rising cost of living as the issue most influencing their votes, according to a September poll from Virginia Commonwealth University. That was the top issue in the poll, ahead of women’s reproductive rights, immigration and education.

Spanberger has made cost-of-living issues a cornerstone of her campaign, rolling out plans to tackle high costs for health care, energy and housing. She’s also seized on Trump’s cuts and the work of the Elon Musk-inspired Department of Government Efficiency given the impact on the large federal workforce based in the state.

“Every day on the campaign trail, I’m hearing about issues of affordability,” Spanberger said in a recent video between campaign stops.

Many of her recent TV ads have highlighted her plans to drive down costs. One recent attack ad criticizes her GOP opponent, Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, for praising Trump’s domestic agenda bill.

“The Trump budget raises health care costs, raises mortgages, raises the price of electricity and gas,” a narrator says in the ad. “You pay more so billionaires can pay less.”

BACKGROUND

Earlier this year, Spanberger rolled out her plan to lower costs for Virginians across the board — her Affordable Virginia Plan, which focuses on lowering energy, healthcare, and housing costs for Virginia families.

Last month, the Spanberger campaign released a new TV and digital ad, titled “Raise Costs,” highlighting Sears’ praise for the Republican bill signed into law last month by President Trump. Sears said the legislation — which is projected to raise Virginians’ healthcare costs, mortgage payments, and utility bills — “does so many great things.”

Spanberger has also announced her Growing Virginia Plan and Strengthening Virginia Schools Plan — showing that her administration will have a plan on day one to address challenges facing Virginia’s economy and schools.

As a Member of Congress, Spanberger built a record of working with both Democrats and Republicans to deliver results for Virginians — and was named the most bipartisan Member of Congress from Virginia.
