Culpeper Star-Exponent: National Police Week recognized locally

By Staff

Local law enforcement are recognizing May 11-17 at National Police Week.

Members of the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office command staff attended the Police Week Memorial at Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy commemorating the beginning of the annual week.

“This ceremony represents the commitment of all law enforcement and remembers those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The Sheriffs and Chiefs of the region place small American flags in the wreath for each of the fallen from their respective agencies, they were accompanied by family members if they were in attendance,” according to a CCSO post.

“We stand with every agency in the country who has lost someone in the line of duty.”

CCSO recognized fallen Capt. Tony Sisk who died in 2021 from complications related to COVID contracted in the line of duty.

Over at the Culpeper Police Department, officers were honored to continue an annual tradition of assisting Police Unity Tour Chapter IV on their three-day ride from Richmond to Washington, D.C. during National Police Week.

The Police Unity Tour rides to raise public awareness of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, and to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, according to post.

Culpeper PD also recently escorted Carry The Load during its annual Memorial Day National Relay stop at Culpeper National Cemetery.

Carry The Load started as a mission to restore the original meaning of Memorial Day: honor and remember the sacrifices made by military, veterans, first responders and their families.

Former 7th District Congressman Abigail Spanberger, Democratic nominee for Virginia Governor, issued a statement commemorating National Police Week saying it is a time to recognize the continued sacrifice of those who put on the badge and put themselves in harm’s way every day to keep communities safe.

“We also honor Virginia’s law enforcement officers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty and remember their dedicated service. My father was a career law enforcement officer. Growing up, I watched him leave our home each morning to serve a mission he deeply believed in — a mission rooted in duty and service to others. When I began my career in federal law enforcement, I was proud to follow in his footsteps and work with local police departments to keep our neighbors safe.

“Those who put on the uniform deserve more than our thanks and gratitude — they deserve leaders who will do everything in their power to make sure Virginia’s police officers come home to their families at the end of the day. As the next Governor of Virginia, I will always work to provide our law enforcement with the tools, training, and resources they need to safely serve their communities. This week — and every week, I’m humbled to stand behind Virginia’s brave law enforcement officers,” Spanberger said.
