WEEMS, Va. — Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger yesterday highlighted the importance of supporting Coastal Virginia’s economy, sustaining Virginia’s seafood industry, and supporting local jobs.
During a tour of W.E. Kellum Seafood in Weems, Virginia, Spanberger met with watermen, oyster shuckers and processors, and local business owners from across the region. Spanberger listened to these Virginians’ vision for how to best strengthen the industry, support the local workforce, and address the challenges facing Virginia’s coastal economy. She also made clear that she will be a Governor who listens to and works with the industry to keep Virginia competitive.
“The Northern Neck and Virginia’s coastal communities are home to America’s best seafood. The folks I met today help keep Virginia’s economy moving and make Virginia seafood what it is — a billion dollar industry,” said Spanberger during the visit. “I’m grateful for every business owner, waterman, and worker who took the time out of their day to discuss with me their vision for Virginia’s future. As the next Governor of Virginia, I will put them first — and I will work to make sure we are sending a message to some of our neighboring states who might like to think that their product is as good as Virginia’s.”
Seafood is a $1 billion dollar industry in Virginia — supporting more than 7,000 jobs and generating more than $26 million in tax revenue each year.

She and her husband Adam are the proud parents of three school-aged daughters in Virginia public schools.
