RICHMOND, Va. — Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement on the passing of Gerald E. “Gerry” Connolly (D-VA-11).
“Today, Virginia mourns a man who enlivened our politics, brought boundless energy to political debates, worked tirelessly to make the lives of his constituents better, and brought laughter to those around him. I feel incredibly lucky to have known, worked alongside, and learned from Congressman Gerry Connolly for many years; he led by example.
“He was ferocious in his devotion to his principles, the people he loved and served, and the ideals that drove his public service. However, even in the darkest of moments, he endeavored to bring a spark of joy, to remind us all that in challenges, there can be laughter and it can ground us for the fight and challenges ahead. He was a fighter and the type of man anyone would be lucky to have in their corner — relentless in his focus, but earnest in his motivations — and so many Virginians had him in their corner.
“My memories of Gerry will forever bring a smile to my lips and a stiffening to my spine — just as Gerry would want it. As we mourn a man who will be remembered as a model public servant, a fierce man of principle, and a larger-than-life story teller, let us do as he would want us to do — cry a little, laugh a lot, and continue the fight for all that is right. Gerry’s passing leaves a deep hole in the hearts of so many Virginians, including myself, and a deep void on Capitol Hill.
“Adam and I are keeping his beloved wife Smitty, his daughter who was his pride and joy, his family, his staff, and constituents in our prayers as they mourn his loss — and as we reflect on how lucky we are to have had Gerry in our lives.”
