Spanberger: “To Every Virginian Who Has Answered the Call: Thank You for Your Courage, Your Service, and Your Sacrifice”
RICHMOND, Va. — To mark the beginning of Military Appreciation Month, Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement recognizing Virginia’s Veterans, servicemembers, and military families for their service — and reaffirming her commitment to standing up for America’s heroes.
“Today, I’m proud to stand with Virginians across our Commonwealth to honor the hundreds of thousands of active duty servicemembers, Veterans, and military families who call Virginia home.
“As the proud daughter and the granddaughter of Veterans, I know that our freedoms and safety are only guaranteed by those who have borne the battle — and the families who stand behind them. To every Virginian who has answered the call: thank you for your courage, your service, and your sacrifice.
“Making sure our Commonwealth’s heroes receive the strongest possible support is our sacred obligation to those who have sacrificed so much for our country and our Commonwealth. As Governor, I will always speak up for the Virginians who’ve stood up for us, and I will work to protect the healthcare, benefits, and job opportunities they’ve earned through their service — particularly in this moment when DOGE is targeting the VA, threatening critical health services, and forcing Virginia Veterans to pay the price.”
BACKGROUND
In Congress, Abigail brought Republicans and Democrats together to expand healthcare coverage and improve job opportunities for Virginia’s Veterans.
Abigail voted to pass the bipartisan Honoring Our PACT Act, which expanded U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare and disability benefits for thousands of Virginians who were exposed to burn pits and other toxic substances during the Vietnam War, Gulf War, and post-9/11 eras. The bipartisan law included legislation Abigail led to investigate the health impacts of jet fuel exposure on servicemembers.
President Biden also signed into law Spanberger’s bipartisan bill to provide recycled federal computers to Veterans as they look for new employment opportunities.
As the next Governor of Virginia, Abigail will work to expand opportunity and make sure our Veterans receive the best possible care — and stand up to attempts to slash support for our nation’s heroes.
