RICHMOND, Va. — Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement after the passing of Pope Francis.

“My family and I are reflecting upon the extraordinary legacy of Pope Francis. In his final papal blessing shared on Easter, Pope Francis called for unity — urging leaders across the globe ‘not to yield to the logic of fear which only leads to isolation from others.’

“His papacy was defined by concern for and advocacy on behalf of those who are overlooked, suffering, and vulnerable. Pope Francis faithfully served his mission of creating a more merciful, just, and compassionate world, and he led by example.

“I am grateful for his example of servant leadership and praying for all who mourn him.”
