Spanberger: “Virginia’s Parents Deserve the Strongest Support Possible When It Comes to Their Children’s Education”
More Than 12,000 Children Across Virginia Are Enrolled in Head Start Programs
RICHMOND, Va. — Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement in response to President Trump’s proposal to eliminate federal support for Head Start — a move that would devastate early childhood education opportunities for thousands of Virginia families.
“As a parent with three daughters in Virginia public schools, nothing is more important to me than making sure every child across every corner of our Commonwealth is set up to succeed in and out of the classroom. Head Start has a proven record of success in Virginia. For thousands of families, the program serves as a critical lifeline to connect their young kids with an early, foundational education — particularly in rural and underserved communities across the Commonwealth.
“Virginia’s parents deserve the strongest support possible when it comes to their children’s education, not fewer or zero options. Eliminating Head Start funding would not only jeopardize the future success of so many of Virginia’s students — it would force parents to pay more for childcare at a time when families are already struggling with high costs.
“As Governor, I will oppose the Trump Administration’s efforts to strip opportunities away from Virginia’s kids — and I will always work to make sure every Virginia student has the resources and support they need to succeed.”
